One of the most exceptional early enamel pieces we have had the privilege of handling and showing. Although the hallmarks are rubbed, there is a duty stamp remaining, which dates this unique piece to c.1865-1875, making it over 150 years old.
Likely a mourning piece the black enamel would have symbolised the passing of a loved one, whilst the white pearl purity and tears. Unusually the ring bares no engraving denoting who was lost, so it is possible that this was a private mourning or possibly never actually worn and potentially an old shop piece, which would explain the near pristine condition.
The enamelling has a gorgeous William Morris feel to it with swirling leaves and patterns running along the shoulders, which, coupled with the buttercup setting the pearl is held in, gives the piece a wonderful, feminine, feel. The ring is offered in excellent antique condition with only the smallest enamel loss to the side of the ring.
A truly wonderful piece and one that you will not see again.
