A fine example of an Essex crystal reverse intaglio. This romantic piece features a large rock crystal cabochon to the centre, which has been painstakingly carved to the reverse and detailed with oil paints to bring a three-dimensional dove to life. This is a centuries old technique perfected by the finest of miniaturists in the mid-1800s, renowned for their intricate work. 
 
The cabochon has been set with a traditional gold backing that makes it look as though the dove is flying through the bright morning sun. Surrounded by a halo of antique rose cut diamonds the ring has a truly romantic feel to it. Some diamonds have small nicks visible with a loupe but on the whole the stones are in good condition. There are some small areas of wear to the bezel surrounding the rock crystal, as well as to the reverse of the ring, but this is consistent with age and nothing of concern.
 
It is unusual to find Essex crystal as a ring so we suspect this piece may have been converted from a brooch or stick pin, however this has been expertly done with the addition of a hand pierced gallery that curves comfortably around your finger. Finished with a trident of gold attaching the timeless yellow gold band. The band itself is a little oval in shape to accommodate the large head of the ring, which makes it tricky to accurately size, however this ring would comfortably fit anywhere from a size Q – T approx.
