  • A truly fabulous antique opal and diamond cocktail ring. Believed to be c.1850-1900 this impressive piece features a sizable moval opal to the centre. Estimated at just shy of two and a half carats in weight, the natural opal has a subtle play of colour that dances across its surface as turned in the light. The opal has some superficial wear visible with magnification but is in lovely condition overall. Hard to say but due to the excellent condition of the stone and the setting style we suspect it could be a replacement stone, perhaps set in the place of an older glass panel, although we are certainly not complaining at its addition.

Surrounding the opal is a stunning boarder of chunky old mined cut diamonds on a backdrop of rich blue enamel. The old cut stones each have that perfect squarish outline of true 1800s diamonds, which followed the natural crystal structure of the rough diamond. Set in classic early Victorian, cut down, collets in contrasting silver that hug the individual outlines of the diamonds to perfection. There is one diamond which is an eight-cut opposed to an old mined cut and likely a replacement stone, although it blends in wonderfully and is in keeping with the era of the ring. There are one or two subtle knicks to the diamonds visible under magnification, but these are very minor and hard to notice even with the aid of a loupe.

Possibly beginning life as a brooch or clasp the piece appears to have been converted into a ring at a later stage in its life. A sympathetic 18ct gold gallery being carefully soldered into place to create this stunning piece.

Sized using an old sizing technique of adding gold balls to the inside of the shank the ring measures a size K (US 5 1/8) on a mandrel but fits truer to M – O (US 6 – 7). Due to this it is not possible in our opinion to reduce the size of the ring any further, although we can happily make it larger. With the removal of the balls we estimate the ring would be approximately a size S (US 9 1.8) and could happily be made larger still.
